Prayer Wheels, Mani WheelsThe Tibetan Prayer Wheels in this section come in a variety of styles. We offer hand-held prayer wheels, as well as standing prayer wheels and wall-mounted prayer wheels. The Tibetan Buddhist mantra, om mani padme hum, which is a mantra calling on Chenrezig, the Buddha of Compassion, literally translates to Hail to the jewel in the lotus. This mantra is written on the outside of each of the prayer wheels in this section. This mantra is also written over and over again on mantras rolled up on the inside of these prayer wheels. It is believed that spinning the prayer wheel is as effective as saying the mantra. It is also believed that reading or looking at a mantra is as effective as saying it. By writing the mantra many times on the paper inside of the prayer wheels, the mantra can be 'said' more times with each rotation. Each prayer wheel is filled with thousands of copies of the Om Mani Padme Hum mantra. The prayer wheel has been used by Milarepa, Marpa, and other great yogis of Tibet. The spinning of a prayer wheel is also representative of 'turning of the doctrine,' one of the first teachings of the Buddha, when he set the wheel of law in motion. Our prayer wheels come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials, including copper, jade, and elm wood. Among our most popular hand-held prayer wheels is our prayer wheel in a box, which makes a nice gift for both newcomers to Tibetan culture, and those who have been practicing Buddhists for a long time. |
